What is the difference between organic and natural perfumes?

Organic means that all or substantial part of a perfumes ingredient is derived from plants that are planted, harvested and distilled without the use of toxic chemicals. Natural means that all or substantial ingredients of a perfume is derived from a plant and not from any synthetic ingredients made from a chemical laboratory.

What is the difference between natural and synthetic perfumes?

Accepted Answer

Natural p[erfunes is made entirely from botanical extracts (distilled or solvent extracted), whole essential oils, and resins, derived from plants, flowers, fruits, woods, and spices. The base (carrier) is usually organic alcohol, plant oil, or water.

Be aware that so-called “natural isolates” are not truly natural. When components are separated from their original essential oil, their characteristics and functions change. As a result, claims that these isolates offer the same holistic or well-being benefits as whole natural oils are misleading.

Natural isolates share the same INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) names as their synthetic counterparts. This overlap makes it easy for some manufacturers, suppliers, and perfumers to misleadingly claim that their ingredients are natural. In addition, the extraction process for natural isolates can sometimes involve the use of toxic or synthetic chemicals, which compromises their purity. As a result, even if an isolate originates from an essential oil, it may no longer be considered truly natural.

Does your perfume contains sulfate, phthalates, paraben, and any other toxic chemicals as an emulsifier, solubiliser, and preservative?

No, all our perfumes, body cream, body wash, and hand sanitiser does not contain any of the above and any toxic chemicals. Our perfumes are certified vegan by PETA.

Do you use solvent extracted or steam distilled essential oils when creating the scent? What is the difference between the two processes?

Accepted Answer

We primarily use steam distilled essential oils most of which are certified organic and a minimum use of solvent extracted essential oils (without hexane and any toxic chemicals that are commonly used during this process) to create the scent of your perfumes. These solvent extracted essential oils are called Absolutes and are certified organic. This means it used organic solvents that are food grade and are safer alternative.

Absolutes  that are solvent extracted are plants soaked into solvent liquids  or any aqueous solutions to extract and infuse the properties, flavours, oils and scents of plants while Essential Oils are steamed distilled. Steam distillation is more complex and labour intensive. It is 100% natural pocess in extracting the oils from a plant. Natural Extract is considered an allergen to human is potentially because the plants are soaked to aqueous solutions that have toxic ingredients.

Do you use steam-distilled Isolates in your perfume and why?

Accepted Answer

Please note that fractional distillation is different from steam distillation. Fractional distillation is used to isolate a molecule from a compound of a plant. It is like splitting cells or the DNA of a plant. The final product is "Isolates", which is currently marketed as "natural component" or "natural extracts".  These molecules/compound chemical characteristics and functionality changes when taken out from its natural environment.  This can cause respiratory and dermal irritation. No, we do not use isolates on our perfume.

Are synthetic fragrance like "Parfum" toxic?

Accepted Answer

Yes, because most of it is derived from petroleum. The components of "Parfum" is not disclosed because it can potentially have a very toxic ingredient. Our perfume is created with pure essential oil. We work with mother nature not against her. You will find "Parfum" as one of the ingredients in your ingredient label at the back of the perfume, hand sanitiser, shampoo, lotion, etc at grocery shops, chemist shops, online store. It is mostly found on cheap or synthetic products.

Is isolate for fragrancing toxic?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this is because it has gone through the unnatural process the way petroleum is distilled. Where hydrocarbons are separated. This is a process called fractional distillation were constituents or compositions of a plant or essential oils are isolated. Another issue with fractional distillation is that this only the first step when isolating a compound from a plant. The next step is that it can involve the application of toxic chemicals.

The difference between steam distillation and fractional distillation is that the former extract a mixture of compounds from the plant while the later isolates the various mixture of compounds to a single compound. Fractional distillation comes mostly in a liquid form already while steam distillation comes from the plant. We only use steam distilled ingredients.

A few natural perfumers use isolate ingredient to increase their margin and because of lack of formulation ingenuity to use only natural ingredients. A true natural perfume artist will never compromise. This separates us and our brand from a business type model. Why do other natural perfume brands use isolate?

Accepted Answer

They use isolates to give them flexibility in creating the profile and composition of your perfume. This gives them consistency, and it is an easy way to create perfumes that provide the sharpness and precision of a synthetic perfume.  It is difficult to create a beautiful perfume using only essential oils and absolutes that provides the sharpness and consistency of a synthetic perfume.  It takes time and creativity to make one. It is not for the faint-hearted.

How do we know if the natural perfume has "natural isolates"?

Accepted Answer

The perfume smells sharp and very refined, similar to a synthetic perfume. The brand may disclose the use of certain ingredients on their label as "natural component," "natural isolates," or "naturally derived molecules." However, it’s important to note that isolates are not considered “naturally occurring” chemicals under the Australian Industrial Chemicals Scheme (AICS). When labeled as "natural component" or "natural isolates," such disclosures can potentially breach both AICS and Australian Consumer Law (ACL) standards.

If your natural perfume does not show these disclosures, yet it smells sharp and refined like a synthetic fragrance, check whether the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) names for these isolates are properly listed on the label or the brand’s website.
It's also important to know that isolates and synthetic chemicals share the same INCI names, making it difficult for consumers to determine whether a particular compound is plant-derived or synthetically manufactured.

If you're purchasing a perfume for wellbeing or ethical reasons — such as being vegan, natural, organic, sustainable, or low in environmental impact — our advice is to avoid buying "natural perfumes that contain isolates". This is because transparency and traceability around these ingredients are often unclear or unverifiable.

Is an oil-based perfume better than alcohol-based perfume?

Accepted Answer

A straight answer is No. Cold-pressed oil is used in an oil-based perfumes. This type of oils oxidises quickly and must be used within 7 days. Oxidised cold-pressed oil causes skin ageing. While alcohol-based perfumes are pretty much safer on your skin. Why? Alcohol in perfumes is just used as a carrier of the essential oils. It terms of density, alcohol is very light compared to essential oil. This means that when you spray your perfume. Most of the alcohol evaporates even before it reaches your skin and the only ingredients left on your skin is the essential oils, which were used to create the scent of your perfume. Learn why we use wheat alcohol as the the cleanest, and most effective perfume base.>​ Our perfumes do not use cold-pressed oils that can cause ageing of the skin. Yes, our perfumes have undenatured food-grade alcohol, which is derived from fermented organic wheat and sugarcane. Undenatured alcohol means it does not contain toxic denaturant. It is an ingredient that does not cause ageing of your skin. The only fall back of alcohol is that it can dry your skin when used in a large area of your skin in a prolonged period of time. We incorporated vegetable glycerine to mitigate the drying of the skin. Please note that a food-grade alcohol does not dry your skin the same way an a denatured alcohol does. This is because it does not have a toxic denaturant or methanol.​

Is alcohol toxic when topically applied?

Accepted Answer

Alcohol that is derived from bio or plants like sugarcane, wheat, grapes, potatoes, etc are not toxic. Alcohol that is distilled using yeast (plant-derived) is not toxic. Alcohol that is derived from sugar cane or wheat that is organically planted and harvested is not toxic. Alcohol that is food grade and without denaturant is not toxic. Our alcohol is not toxic because it is derived from plants (wheat and sugar) and does not have denaturant. Our alcohol is food grade.

However, alcohol that has denaturant and has gone through a synthetic process with the use of toxic chemicals is toxic. You will see these types and quality in synthetic perfumes, in your shampoos, and lotions. An example of synthetic alcohol is isopropyl and methanol you will see that in cheap hand sanitisers. Alcohol that is derived from petroleum is very toxic.

Why don't you use grape alcohol?

Accepted Answer

Grape alcohol is not a good carrier of scent in making perfume. It has this strong sweet and sometimes grainy smell that conflicts with the profile of the scent. The scent of grape alcohol is overwhelming while a pure distilled food-grade wheat and sugar cane does not have any smell. These types of alcohol actually smells like water. As a perfumer, we can say that it does not make sense to use grape alcohol when making perfumes. It will yield very low-quality perfume. Please also note that having grape alcohol in your perfume does not mean it is not toxic. If the grape alcohol is denatured it is also toxic. Denatured grape alcohol is no different from putting petroleum-derived alcohol on your perfume.

Does your perfume have animal fragrances?

Accepted Answer

No, all our perfumes, body cream, body wash, and hand sanitiser does not contain any animal fragrances and is not tested on animals. Our perfumes are certified cruelty free by PETA and certified vegan by Vegan Australia Org and PETA.

How long does Amacyn natural perfumes last on the skin?

Accepted Answer

It varies across our range of perfume. It is between 4 hours to 24 hours. Yes, it is possible to create a perfume that last for 24 hours using pure steam distilled essential oils. This is because steam distillation is the highest form of extracting the properties and scent of a plant. The first 2 to 5 hours of distillation is of the premium grade. This is the type of essential oils we use in your perfume. This is why it will last longer on your skin compared to a synthetic or isolate made perfume. To make a statement that natural perfume does not longer on skin compared to synthetic perfumes is false. If you hear a perfumer saying natural perfumes do not last on the skin. It is either they do not put quality ingredients on your perfumes or they do not really know how to layer notes in a perfume.

Can the type of skin dry, oily, or moist influence the longevity of the perfume on my skin?

Accepted Answer

Yes it can contribute but it is not the main reason. If you have dry skin you are accustomed to using woody profiles. You naturally pick this as a profile that suits your skin and where you get more longevity. More layers of notes and the more intense is the base notes makes a perfume last longer in your skin.

Yes it can contribute but it is not the main reason. On summer days where the weather is hot land humid lighter perfumes are best to wear. Winter tends to dry our skin hence a more woody perfume suits most to perfume wearer.

Yes, it can. This is the reason why a particular perfume profile maybe smelling good on your skin and not to another person.

Accepted Answer

Two to Three years is the shelf life of our perfumes. Natural perfumes made with pure steam distilled essential oils, wheat, sugarcane, and other plant ingredients have longer shelf life.

Accepted Answer

It is important from a traceability perspective. The quality and compliance with regulatory bodies in relation to how the ingredients are produced and ensuring that the product is genuine are very important for consumers to know. You would like to know what you are applying on your skin has gone through rigorous compliance from the country of origin of the ingredients. That the producers of the ingredients can be trusted.

Our organic perfumes  are certified Product of Australia and the rest of our skincare products are Australian Made certified. All of our products were independently audited by Australian Made Campaign.

Why is your perfume less expensive than natural perfumes in retail shops and malls?

We have very lean operating expenses so that we are able to offer you a better price than other natural perfumes. We also do not use magazines and other unproductive marketing campaigns. We do not pay magazines and editors to tell you how good is our product. We believe in a true advertisement which is reflective of our client reviews. We just want to keep it real and simple.

How does your price compares to synthetic perfume prices?

The cost and quality of our ingredients cannot be compared to those used in synthetic perfumes. Synthetic fragrances are significantly cheaper to produce — for example, the ingredients in a 30ml synthetic perfume may cost as little as AUD $1.50 to $5.00. The final retail price is then largely driven by packaging, branding, marketing, and retailer markups, particularly in high-end synthetic perfume brands.

In contrast, our perfumes are crafted using natural and organic ingredients that are not mass-produced like synthetic fragrance compounds. This inherently results in higher production costs due to limited supply and greater demand.

Furthermore, our ingredients are derived from plants that are seasonal, cultivated with care, and distilled through labor-intensive processes. These factors add considerable cost to the final product — but they also contribute to a more authentic and responsible fragrance experience.

We believe our pricing is highly competitive within the natural perfume category, particularly when compared to brands that use natural isolates. Isolates — while technically natural — are often used to reduce production costs and mimic synthetic scent profiles.

For brands that avoid isolates and still offer lower prices than ours, it is often because their ingredients are not certified organic. Non-organic essential oils are cheaper to produce, as their farming and distillation practices are less regulated and cost-intensive.
